The Bishop Is Coming!
We are privileged to have a visit from our assisting bishop (and the former Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church), the Rt. Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori on the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord on Sunday, January 7. This is one of the special days for offering baptisms, and it is also the only opportunity to have confirmations and receptions into the Church.
Sacraments are outward signs of God’s grace working in our lives. Baptism is the formal, sacramental method of inclusion into the Christian family. It is an entrance into the baptismal covenant with God. Baptism into any Christian denomination works for all denominations, so you need never repeat it.
Confirmation is a well-considered, mature step forward in one’s discipleship, and it is also reflects a choice of denomination. One chooses to be confirmed as an Episcopalian or Catholic or Lutheran, for example, and so one should be familiar with and comfortable with the Church’s teachings and practices.
Reception is a special action by the bishop for a Christian who has been confirmed in another Christian tradition but wishes to acknowledge formally their choice of The Episcopal Church as their spiritual home. It is necessary for people who wish to be in an Episcopal religious order or to be ordained. While not necessary for others, it can be an important step for people who recognize that they have found spiritual truth and a home in the Episcopal Church.
If you desire baptism for yourself or a child or wish to consider confirmation or reception when Bishop Katharine is here, please contact Janine ASAP at email@example.com.
