Connecting...: Distributing the Eucharist

A Lay Eucharistic Minister or “LEM” is a lay person (that is, not ordained) who is licensed by the bishop to administer the consecrated elements of the Eucharist. They administer the consecrated bread and wine at any celebration of the eucharist in the absence of enough priests and deacons to assist the celebrant.

Lay Eucharistic Visitors (LEVs) may go from a Eucharist service and share the sacrament with members of the congregation who were unable to be present at the celebration because of illness or infirmity. Persons may be licensed for either or both LEM/LEV ministries.

This ministry does not take the place of the ministry of priests and deacons concerning the administration of the Eucharist.

Lay Eucharistic Ministers or LEMs meet every other month.
